4. How do I check local codes and restrictions?
Your local City Hall, or County Seat (or equivalent) is in most
cases the point of contact. Many localities have an actual "Sign
Inspector", but others will have the building inspector or a
city engineer designated as the person who handles all sign related
functions. Some cities and counties have no sign related codes at
all. The sign inspector should be able to tell you or furnish you
with the appropriate sign codes and restrictions. It is generally
best to have a hard copy of the code in your hands before deciding
of the size, type and placement of your sign. You may be disappointed
if you wait until you are into the design process, or you may want
to file for a variance with your local government.
